چکیده

A Model-Eliciting Activity (MEA) presents student teams with a thought-revealing, modeleliciting, open-ended, realistic, client-driven problem for resolution. Here we extend the original MEA construct developed by mathematics education researchers to upper-level engineering coursework and introduce an ethical component. Our extensions also require students to integrate previously learned concepts as they gain new understanding. We propose that MEAs offer engineering educators at least two potential benefits: improved conceptual understanding and a means for assessing the problem solving process. However, these benefits will only accrue if the MEAs are properly implemented. Consequently, relative to the first we propose certain strategies, learned through experience, for successful MEA implementation, recognizing that this is not a simple task. In addition, we suggest using MEAs as assessment tools and illustrate how they can help analyze students’ problem solving processes. Our findings are based on experiments conducted in different learning environments over a two year period at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering. This paper should serve as a resource for those engineering educators and researchers interested in implementing MEAs.

Mini workshop - A strategy for assessing student work on open-ended problems

Assessing student work on realistic, openended problems is challenging when multiple solutions of varying quality can be expected. A balance needs to be sought between school-like and engineering-practice-like feedback and assessment of student work if an instructor wishes to capitalize on the authenticity of a problem. This workshop will work with the ideas of authentic assessment for open-end...

Impact Of Feedback And Revision On Student Team Solutions To Model Eliciting Activities

Helping first-year engineering students to embrace the iterative and open-ended nature of engineering problem solving is a challenge when their prior learning experiences have focused heavily on achieving a correct answer in a single attempt. In this paper, the authors will present a case study of student work from the Fall 2007 implementation of Model-Eliciting Activities (MEAs) to demonstrate...

Modeling and solving multi-skilled resource-constrained project scheduling problem with calendars in fuzzy condition

In this study, we aim to present a new model for the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) considering a working calendar for project members and determined the skill factor of any member using the efficiency concept. For this purpose, the recyclable resources are staff resources where any person with multiple skills can meet the required skills of activities in a given time. ...

Student Modelling for Operational Skill Training in Air Traffic Control

Current student modelling techniques cannot be applied directly to operational training on simulators in complex and dynamic worlds such as Air Traffic Control because of the lack of appropriate expert models and time constraints. The objective of this research is to present a student modelling approach for individualising the simulation training that (1) is specific to operational skill traini...

Evidence for the Efficacy of Student-active Learning Pedagogies

This paper describes a 25-year project in which we defined problem solving, identified effective methods for developing students‘ skill in problem solving, implemented a series of four required courses to develop the skill, and evaluated the effectiveness of the program. Four research projects are summarized in which we identified which teaching methods failed to develop problem solving skill a...
